In a slew of initiatives undertaken and as part of UAE’s Project of the 50 initiative, the UAE government has introduced a new class of visa — Green Visa.

Green Visa:

A Green Visa is a permit allowing expatriates to work in the UAE without being sponsored by their employer. Aimed primarily at entrepreneurs, businesspersons, top students, investors, and highly-skilled individuals, Green Visa holders will be able to sponsor their parents, and also their children up to the age of 25.

Additionally, the government announced that residents who receive a pink slip or are terminated by their employer will get a grace period of 90 to 180 days, as opposed to the extant 30-day grace period. In an effort to widen the job market, the govt. has also permitted the recruitment of temporary workers above the age of 15 years.

The minister of State & Foreign Trade Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi said that the green visa bolsters the self-dependency of investors and businesspersons looking to carry out new business setup in Dubai. He further said that the Green Visa is a continuation of the three classes of residency visas — Tourist, Golden, and Green. And the introduction of the green visa will ensure stability to the families.

Pioneers and specialists in their individual fields have often professed that such forward-thinking reforms provide for the stability and security of the families. The humanitarian relaxation for widows is a case in point. Instead of the previous 30-day period granted to widows to leave the UAE, there is a full-year period in its place.

Expatriates from neighboring countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Africa, etc. have been a constant source of human resources to the nourishment of UAE’s economy. They constitute about 80% of the UAE’s general populace, making UAE the world’s second largest economy, second to only Saudi Arabia.

The oil-rich gulf countries are increasingly introducing attractive provisions to reduce their dependency on oil. The pandemic has heavily impacted many sectors like tourism, and measures like “Project of the 50” aims to recuperate the UAE’s economy.

Recently, the UAE launched the coveted 10-year Golden Visa. This was the gulf’s first such scheme to retain special talent.

Other gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have followed suit, and introduced initiatives that induce business growth in their countries. For example, Riyadh had announced in 2019 that it will offer permanent residency for 800,000 Riyals.

The UAE aims at procuring AED 500 billion in investment over the next decade, placing the country in the top 10 global investment hubs.
